Companies offering domain name registration are, it seems, everywhere. A Google search for Domain Name Registration returns over 18 million results. And the price and service varies almost as much as their logos. But there is one thing that is certain; if you don’t already have your own domain name you need to get one!

Whether you sell at a venue like Main Street Mall Online, or through your own e-commerce shopping cart equiped website, you need a domain name of your own. It is your address on the Internet and it is where people will come to find you. It is the first step in building your online identity and it is a step you should take as early in the process as possible.

Having the right domain name is a good beginning to developing your place on line and for creating recognition. It can carry, and display, your brand. Get one early. Stick with it. Develop your identity around it. But there are a number of important things to consider when selecting your domain name.

Choosing a domain name can be one of the most frustrating aspects of your online journey. The good thing is you can get it out of the way early. You want a domain name that encapsulates or describes the nature of your business. It should be catchy and memorable. It should be easy to spell and hard to spell incorrectly. And, most of all, it needs to be available. These days that’s not so easy. But there are lots of good ones left. We were amazed, quite frankly, that our domain was still available. So don’t give up. There will be one that is suitable for you.

Some people suggest that a name separated with hyphens (dashes) like this: main-street-mall-online.com would be better than one without, like this: mainstreetmallonline.com though we are not actually sure how valid this is. It is suggested it is better for search engines and that people can see, and therefore remember, the individual words better. But it may cause more angst than it is worth. You cause a dilemma for people who wonder are there dashes or not, how many and where, and for those who hear someone say dash but interpret it as slash.

There is no doubt, however, that picking the right domain name can serve you well over the coming years of your business. If you don’t already have one you should act now. But talk to us first. We can help you avoid any problems and even save you money.
